Arnie

I was working my first real job at Deacon’s Lodge in Breezy Point, MN. The course was built by Arnold Palmer Design in the late 90’s. An incredibly fun, expansive golf course that spans 500 acres. The Champions Tour stop was in Minnesota (TPC Twin Cities) and my boss thought of me when it came time to send a rep to be a starter for the Pro Am.

I checked in and got the low down on what to do. I was handed a pairing sheet and realized Mr. Palmer was my first group. Butterflies kicked in. I played it cool as he walked up to the tee. I introduced myself and shook hands with the legendary man. He noticed the Deacon’s Lodge logo on my shirt and kindly reminded me that he built that place. I thanked him for that and always will. It’s truly a special place.

I introduced him to his ever-loyal following. Watched as he belted his tee shot about 225. And I couldn’t look away watching the icon walk down the fairway.

I was fortunate enough to get a picture taken with him that day. A couple weeks later I sent that picture to him with a letter of thanks and asked for an autograph. I received an envelope back from him a few months later that I will forever cherish.

Mr. Palmer, unlike a lot of things in life, did not disappoint. I am forever grateful.
